Our verdict on Takeout
Takeout is an open-source command-line tool from Tighten Co. for running development dependencies in Docker containers. It is designed for developers who need disposable local services without managing each container manually. Supported services include MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis, Elasticsearch, MSSQL, and MongoDB. Takeout runs on macOS, Linux, Windows 10/11, and WSL2, and its local-development focus makes it suited to projects that need databases, caches, search services, or similar dependencies on demand.
Its strongest feature set centers on service lifecycle control. Takeout can start and stop running or stopped containers, disable services without deleting persistent Docker volume data, and provide shell access inside service containers. It can also run multiple versions of a dependency simultaneously, create a shared Docker network with service aliases, and accept additional Docker run options and container arguments. These capabilities make it useful when a development workflow needs version parallelism, retained data, or direct access to containerized services.
Takeout stays deliberately narrow: it is a local Docker dependency manager, not a Kubernetes environment or a Compose workflow. Docker is required, and the product does not include Compose support, IDE integrations, or broader environment tooling. Installation is available through a Docker-based alias or PHP Composer. Choose Takeout when a free, open-source CLI is enough to manage local service containers; choose another tool when the workflow depends on Compose, Kubernetes, integrated IDE support, or a wider environment-management layer.
