Our verdict on Starling

Starling is an open-source desktop shell for people who want a quieter alternative to the standard Windows interface. On Windows 10 and Windows 11 x64 systems, it replaces the taskbar, Start menu, desktop, system tray, notifications, and File Explorer. The replacement Start menu lists installed applications while omitting web search, news feeds, widgets, and promoted, suggested, or recommended items. Its separate Linux desktop environment adds a dock, Launchpad, virtual desktops, window tiling, first-party applications, and screen recording, giving the project a broader desktop scope beyond its Windows shell replacement.

The Windows installation model is practical for users without administrator access: Starling installs per user and does not require administrator privileges. It also restores Windows Explorer automatically if the shell fails, an important safeguard when replacing core desktop components. The Windows edition is presented as an early preview, with version 0.2.0 identified and a direct installer available. That preview status makes Starling more appropriate for users comfortable with an evolving desktop environment than for organizations seeking a mature, standardized shell deployment.

Starling’s main strength is focus. It removes much of the promoted and recommended content built into the Windows desktop while retaining a straightforward application list and a familiar shell-level workspace. The trade-off is equally clear: web search is intentionally absent, and the available customization controls are limited. Choose Starling if an ad-free, minimalist shell matters more than integrated search, widgets, or extensive personalization. Choose another tool if you need a mature Windows release, deeper verified customization, or web-connected Start menu features.
