Our verdict on SourceGit

SourceGit is an open-source desktop graphical client for Git repositories, aimed at developers who want visual repository management across Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its interface brings together commit graphs, repository history, branching, remotes, tags, stashes, diffs, blame, and file history. It also supports core operations such as clone, fetch, pull, push, merge, reset, revert, and cherry-pick, making it suitable for both everyday version control and more involved repository maintenance.

Its strongest distinction is breadth within Git workflows and hosting connections. SourceGit includes interactive rebase and commit editing, submodules, worktrees, patch save and apply, Git LFS, bisecting, image comparison, GitFlow, and commit search. Pull-request creation connects the desktop client with GitHub, GitLab, Gitea, Gitee, and Bitbucket, while AI-assisted commit-message generation adds another workflow option. That combination fits Git users who work across multiple hosting services and need more than basic commit and branch controls.

The setup requirement is straightforward but important: Git must already be installed. Large-file handling is provided through Git LFS, and nested repository workflows are supported through submodules. SourceGit is a strong choice for users who want a free, open-source Git GUI with extensive history, branching, rebase, conflict, patch, LFS, and hosting features. It is less suited to users seeking a client that works without a separate Git installation or whose pull-request workflow depends on hosting services outside GitHub, GitLab, Gitea, Gitee, and Bitbucket.
