Our verdict on Skaffold

Skaffold is an open-source command-line tool for developing and deploying containerized applications, primarily on Kubernetes. It is aimed at developers and teams that want an automated loop around source-file watching, container image building, testing, deployment, and redeployment. The tool runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows, and can also deploy simple container applications to a local Docker daemon.

Its strongest fit is for teams working across varied container and Kubernetes environments. Skaffold supports Docker, Docker Compose, Kubernetes, Minikube, kind, k3d, Docker Desktop, Helm, Kustomize, Kubectl, Jib, Bazel, Buildpacks, ko, and Google Cloud Build. Profiles, environment variables, and user-level configuration help adapt workflows to different environments. During development, it can synchronize changed files into running containers, forward user-defined or automatic ports, collect logs, and configure debugging ports. Pluggable builders and deployers also allow teams to align the development loop with existing build and deployment choices.

Skaffold is free and open source rather than a hosted, plan-based product. That makes it a practical choice for teams comfortable configuring a CLI and maintaining their own container or Kubernetes workflow. It deploys to supported local Kubernetes clusters, but it does not create clusters or manage a fixed cluster topology. Docker Compose support is available for local Docker workflows, although it is experimental. Choose Skaffold when automated development loops, declarative configuration, and broad tool compatibility matter; consider another option if you need a hosted interface, managed cluster provisioning, or a more established Compose workflow.
