Our verdict on Singularity Registry Server

Singularity Registry Server is an open-source, self-hosted registry for institutions, clusters, and individual users managing Singularity container images. It provides web and API endpoints for saving and obtaining containers, with collections for organization and native Singularity client support for pulling and pushing images. User accounts, teams, credentials, and bearer-token authentication make it suitable for groups that need controlled access to an internally operated image service.

Its strongest fit is the Singularity workflow. The registry supports native pulls through the Sylabs Library API and authenticated native pushes, while the web interface organizes containers into collections. A REST API extends access beyond the interface, and tag freezing or protection supports a more controlled image-publishing process. Deployment is built around containerized services and Docker Compose, with MinIO-backed object storage and Redis handling background jobs. Nginx and the Singularity client are also part of its integration surface.

The trade-off is a narrow scope. Singularity Registry Server centers on Singularity images and does not include verified vulnerability scanning or OCI artifact support. It also does not provide documented retention or replication features, making it less suitable for organizations that need broader registry governance or multi-site distribution controls. Choose it when self-hosting, Singularity-native operations, collections, and team access are the priority. Consider an alternative when your registry must cover OCI artifacts, image security scanning, retention management, or replication as core capabilities.
