Its destinations are SharePoint, OneDrive, and Microsoft Teams. The scope suits organizations consolidating older SharePoint environments or shared folders into Microsoft services, rather than teams seeking a general-purpose migration platform for unrelated cloud ecosystems.
Migration controls cover sites, lists, and document libraries, with bulk jobs defined through CSV or JSON files and incremental runs for new or updated files. Assessment scans, validation, dashboards, and downloadable reports help teams review migration activity. Options for permissions, version history, and managed metadata address preservation needs, while PowerShell support allows automation. This combination is useful for planned migrations where administrators need reporting and repeatable runs, though it remains centered on Microsoft sources and targets.
SPMT has no software charge, but using it requires Microsoft 365 destination access and administrator or site permissions, so the free price does not remove the need for the destination environment and appropriate access.
