Our verdict on SeaweedFS

SeaweedFS is a self-hosted distributed storage system for teams that need object, file, and data-lake access in one deployment. It provides an S3-compatible object storage API, POSIX and FUSE access, HDFS compatibility, WebDAV, and Iceberg table support. Its open-source model and support for Linux, macOS, Windows, APIs, and self-hosted environments make it a fit for development teams, infrastructure operators, and organizations managing large file counts across volume servers.

The pricing structure separates development from production use. The Free plan supports development and testing under 25 TB with no license required. The Monthly plan costs $2 per TB per month and includes pay-as-you-go billing, flexible capacity, and cancellation at any time. The Yearly plan costs $20 per TB per year and provides annual billing. At 5 PB and above, the Enterprise plan uses custom volume pricing, volume discounts, and custom contracts and invoicing. Production deployments require a paid license, with Enterprise adding data recovery, self-healing storage, customizable erasure coding, operational controls, and support for production deployments.

Its strongest distinction is breadth across storage and data workflows. Teams can combine object versioning, S3 lifecycle rules, Object Lock with retention and legal hold, active-active or active-passive cluster replication, volume-level replication, erasure coding, and server-side encryption options including SSE-S3, SSE-KMS, and SSE-C. Integrations include AWS SDKs and CLI, rclone, restic, Spark, Trino, Dremio, DuckDB, Kubernetes, and several key-management systems. Choose SeaweedFS when self-hosting and multiple access models matter; choose an alternative if you want a fully managed object-storage service or a free production deployment.
