Our verdict on RevMan

RevMan is Cochrane’s software for producing systematic reviews and meta-analyses. It is designed for individual researchers, organizations, Cochrane authors, and wider evidence-synthesis users who need structured planning, study-data preparation, statistical analysis, risk-of-bias assessment, diagrams, and review writing in one environment. RevMan Web runs in a browser, while RevMan 5 remains available as desktop software for some review formats. Its strongest fit is for teams whose work centers on evidence synthesis and quantitative analysis rather than screening operations.

The published plans show a free plan alongside paid annual subscriptions. The Student plan costs £80 per user per year for eligible students, while the Academic plan costs £100 per user per year for eligible academics. The Standard rate is £130 per user per year. An Organization plan costs £560 for up to 8 users, with additional pricing varying by organization type and seats. A 30-day free trial is available. The listed individual prices are annual GBP amounts plus VAT for EU and UK users, and eligible discounts and free access apply for Cochrane authors and Research4Life countries.

RevMan’s main depth is its analysis and reporting workflow. Researchers can define PICOs before data extraction, import citations and study data from Covidence or templates, run automatic or manual meta-analyses, and perform subgroup and sensitivity analyses. Risk-of-bias assessments, structured writing headings, review templates, and concurrent editing support the wider review process. Integrations with Covidence, GRADEpro GDT, and Cochrane Register of Studies extend its ecosystem fit. However, the product does not provide a verified screening workflow, so teams needing screening as a central capability should consider an alternative. RevMan is the better choice for researchers prioritizing meta-analysis, review structure, and evidence presentation.
