Our verdict on QuickTime Player

QuickTime Player is Apple’s built-in media player for macOS. It is suited to Mac users who want one free app for playing local video and audio, adjusting speed, looping content, viewing subtitles or captions, and watching in picture-in-picture. It also supports AirPlay playback to compatible devices, network playback, and 4K playback. Beyond playback, QuickTime Player can record the Mac screen, camera, or audio, capture connected iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch screens, and handle lightweight movie edits.

Pricing is straightforward: QuickTime Player is free, and the published offering does not present paid plans or paid feature tiers. That makes its recording, screen capture, playback controls, subtitle support, AirPlay output, editing tools, and video export available without a subscription. Export supports resolutions up to 4K, with selected resolutions and codecs available for movies. iCloud Drive is part of its listed ecosystem fit, while AirPlay supports playback to compatible devices.

Its main trade-off is focus. QuickTime Player covers common Mac media tasks, but its documented format support centers on MOV, H.264, HEVC, MPEG-4 audio, and AAC, and the app is available only on macOS. The editing feature set is basic rather than a full production workflow: users can trim, split, rearrange, and rotate movie clips, but the product remains primarily a player with lightweight media tools. Choose QuickTime Player for simple Mac playback, recording, capture, and basic edits; choose another media player when broader platform or format coverage is the priority.
