Our verdict on Querybook
Querybook is Pinterest’s open-source big data IDE for engineers and data scientists who need to discover, create, and share SQL analyses. It runs as a web application in self-hosted infrastructure and combines a SQL editor with autocompletion and syntax highlighting, notebook-style DataDocs, charts, scheduled updates, collaboration, lineage, analytics, and table documentation. The result is a workspace that connects querying with the surrounding work of explaining, reviewing, and sharing data.
Its strongest fit is an organization that wants broad query-engine coverage without separating SQL work from documentation and visualization. Querybook supports Presto, Hive, Druid, Snowflake, BigQuery, MySQL, SQLite, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, and Oracle. It also connects with S3, Google Cloud Storage, Google Sheets, Slack, and email. The plugin system extends query engines, exporters, notifiers, and other capabilities, giving teams a way to adapt the environment to their infrastructure. Scheduled DataDoc updates and query lineage add useful structure for recurring analysis and understanding how data work relates across a team.
Deployment and configuration are the main considerations. Querybook is designed to run in an organization’s infrastructure using Docker or Kubernetes, so it suits teams prepared to manage a self-hosted web application rather than buyers seeking a fully managed service. Optional AI capabilities include title generation, text-to-SQL, SQL fixing, and SQL completion, but they require an AI plugin and configuration with an LLM provider. Choose Querybook if collaborative, extensible, self-hosted analytics is the priority; consider a different category fit if you need a hosted-first workflow with minimal infrastructure ownership.
