About this tool
Internet plans are sold in bits per second (100 Mbps), while files and download managers use bytes (MB, GB), and there are eight bits in every byte — which is why a "100 Mbps" line moves about 12.5 megabytes a second, not 100. This calculator does that conversion for you: pick the file size and its unit, the connection speed and its unit, and it shows how long the transfer takes.
Sizes come in both conventions in everyday use: decimal (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes, as drive makers and download stores count) and binary (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes, as most operating systems report). Speeds can be entered as Kbps, Mbps or Gbps, or as KB/s, MB/s and GB/s.
Real downloads rarely hit the full line speed — protocol overhead, Wi-Fi and busy servers take a share — so the result is shown twice: at full speed, and with an overhead you choose (10% by default).
