  • Where it wins

    • Extensive undo covers file changes, permissions, and bulk renames.
    • Dual panes, previews, archives, tabs, search, and filtering support daily navigation.
    • SSH/SFTP browsing and asynchronous transfers suit remote file workflows.
  • Where it doesn't

    • Windows users should choose another file manager; releases target Linux and macOS.
    • Its terminal-first design is not suited to users seeking a graphical file manager.
    • Plugin integrations require JSON manifests and external commands.

Our verdict on pointer

Pointer is a Rust-based terminal file manager for people who work primarily in command-line environments. It runs on macOS and Linux and is distributed as a single binary, with two panes, configurable pane widths, syntax-highlighted previews, inline image display, archive browsing and editing, SSH/SFTP remote browsing, tabs, bookmarks, search, filtering, bulk renaming, file comparison, and Git status. It is a strong fit for users who want a keyboard-oriented file workflow without giving up previews, remote access, or archive operations.

Its standout strength is operational safety. Pointer supports asynchronous copy and move operations with progress, while undo covers delete, move, rename, copy, symlink, permissions, and bulk rename actions. That range matters when file management involves large transfers, remote locations, or repeated changes across many files. File-picker mode also connects the manager with external tools, and filename search plus content grep help users move from navigation to retrieval without leaving the terminal.

The ecosystem is broad for a terminal application: integrations include bat, fzf, navi, ImageMagick, pdftotext, git, xclip, locate, curl, and Claude. Its plugin system extends the application through JSON manifests and external commands, while image previews can use kitty, sixel, or w3m protocols. Pointer is the better choice for macOS and Linux users who value recoverable operations, remote browsing, and command-line integration. Users who need Windows support or prefer a conventional graphical file manager should choose an alternative.
