Our verdict on PlatformIO IDE
PlatformIO IDE is an open-source embedded development environment built on Visual Studio Code. It is designed for developers working across individual embedded projects or larger hardware and IoT development teams. The IDE supports Windows, macOS, and Linux, with a multi-platform and multi-architecture build system covering targets such as Espressif, STM32, Nordic, Raspberry Pi RP2040, Renesas, RISC-V, Teensy, and TI families. It also supports embedded frameworks including Arduino, ESP-IDF, FreeRTOS, STM32Cube, and Zephyr.
PlatformIO IDE is free and Apache 2.0 open source. Its project model uses platformio.ini environments for managing configurations, targets, and project settings. The integrated workflow covers firmware upload and programming, a serial port monitor, unified device debugging with hardware-probe support, unit testing, static code analysis, and C/C++ intelligent completion and linting. Library and package management, along with a built-in PlatformIO Core CLI terminal, keeps common development tasks within the same environment.
Its ecosystem fit is a key strength: the IDE works with Visual Studio Code, Eclipse, and Sublime Text, while also providing cross-platform support across Windows, macOS, and Linux. The target coverage is broad, but projects still need configuration suited to their selected board, processor family, framework, and debugging hardware. PlatformIO IDE is a strong choice for embedded developers who need one open-source workflow across multiple vendors and architectures. It is less suitable for teams seeking a general-purpose application IDE or a narrowly specialized environment for a single hardware platform.
