Our verdict on Arm Keil MDK

Arm Keil MDK is a software development suite for building, testing, and debugging embedded applications on Arm targets. It is aimed at embedded developers working with Cortex-M, Armv8-M, SecurCore, legacy Arm microcontrollers, Ethos-U processors, and Fast Models. Keil Studio Visual Studio Code extensions, Keil μVision, command-line tools, CMSIS-Packs, integrated debugging, and multiple toolchains give teams several ways to manage development. The Community edition also provides a path for students, hobbyists, makers, and non-commercial projects.

The plan structure separates non-commercial development from commercial engineering work. Community includes Keil Studio, Keil μVision, and Cortex-M device support, while Essential adds commercial development, all Cortex-M cores, VS Code extensions, and API access. Professional includes the Essential features plus Arm Virtual Hardware, the Arm Compiler for Embedded FuSa, and legacy tools. This makes the lower tier suitable for learning and personal projects, while commercial teams need a paid edition and teams with virtualization or functional-safety requirements need Professional.

Its main strength is breadth across the embedded workflow and Arm ecosystem. Developers can combine Arm, GCC, and LLVM toolchains with CMSIS-Packs, RTX5, CMSIS-FreeRTOS, networking, USB, file-system middleware, integrated flashing, and command-line continuous-integration workflows. Debugging and probe compatibility cover ULINK, CMSIS-DAP, ST-LINK, and J-Link, while Arm Virtual Hardware adds simulation models in the Professional tier. That breadth suits teams standardizing on Arm development across tools and targets. It is less suitable for strictly non-Arm work, and the split between current MDK v6 tools and legacy μVision/MDK v5 components may require teams to choose their workflow carefully.
