Our verdict on Pgweb
Pgweb is an open-source, web-based client for exploring PostgreSQL databases. It suits solo users and small teams that want a self-hosted database interface for running and analyzing custom SQL. The application runs as a standalone binary on macOS, Linux, and Windows, and it can also be deployed as a self-hosted web application. PostgreSQL 9.6 and later are supported, with local and self-hosted deployment options.
Its strongest fit is SQL-led database work. Pgweb combines custom query execution and analysis with multiple database sessions, query history, server bookmarks, and native SSH tunnels. These features support repeated exploration across saved connections and remote environments without shifting to a broader database management suite. Results from tables or queries can be exported in CSV, JSON, and XML formats, which makes the client useful when query output needs to move into another workflow. HTTP basic authentication is also included for access control at the web layer.
Pgweb keeps its scope narrow. PostgreSQL is the supported database, so teams working across several database engines may need a different client. The listed capabilities also do not include data editing or visual query building, making Pgweb better suited to users comfortable writing SQL than to users who prefer a graphical builder or spreadsheet-style administration. There is no paid tier described: the product is free and open source, distributed under the MIT License, with community support and documentation. Choose Pgweb for focused, self-hosted PostgreSQL exploration; choose an alternative if broad database coverage, visual query construction, or editing workflows are central requirements.
