Our verdict on OpenZiti

OpenZiti is an open-source zero trust networking platform for teams that need private application access without exposing inbound ports. Created and maintained by NetFoundry, it combines controllers, routers, SDKs, tunnelers, and a web-based administration console. Developers can embed zero trust connectivity into applications with SDKs, while teams can protect existing applications through tunnelers without code changes. Its identity-based authentication and authorization model is suited to organizations securing applications, services, and endpoints across web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and self-hosted environments.

OpenZiti is self-hosted and free under the Apache 2.0 license, with no license cost. Teams manage the platform themselves, including its encrypted overlay mesh, smart routing, controllers, routers, and administration console. The architecture supports end-to-end encryption, mutual TLS, private authenticated DNS, outbound-only connectivity, and posture checks for endpoint authorization. That combination makes it a fit for organizations that want control over deployment and application connectivity, particularly when they need both SDK-based integration for new software and tunnelers for existing applications.

Its focus is narrower than a full security service edge suite. OpenZiti provides private application access, device posture checks, tunneling, and encrypted networking, but it does not provide verified secure web gateway, CASB, DLP, or browser isolation capabilities. Integration breadth is also more centered on its own SDKs, tunnelers, and self-hosted components than on a broad ecosystem of security services. Choose OpenZiti when open-source control, private application access, and identity-aware networking are priorities. Consider an alternative when the main requirement is web security, data-loss prevention, browser isolation, or a broader integrated SSE feature set.
