Our verdict on OpenTalk

OpenTalk is a browser-based video conferencing platform for public authorities, businesses, educational institutions, providers, and other organizations. It supports video meetings, screen sharing, integrated chat, collaborative whiteboards, polls, moderation controls, recording, telephone dial-in, and open APIs. Access is available through web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, with hosted service in German data centers or a self-hosted deployment option.

The plan structure covers small meetings through larger sessions. Starter includes 10 conference rooms, calls of up to 30 minutes, up to 5 participants, 100 MB of storage, and FAQ support. Standard costs €75 per user per year or €7.50 per user per month and adds unlimited conference rooms, 240-minute calls, up to 50 participants, recording, 1 GB of storage, and breakout rooms. Premium costs €125 per user per year or €12.50 per user per month, with unlimited call length, up to 200 participants, 10 GB of storage, streaming, and telephone dial-in. Custom plans add custom features and an on-premises hosting option.

OpenTalk fits organizations that need open-source software alongside identity and access controls. Single sign-on and two-factor authentication are supported, while Outlook calendar and REST API integrations connect the service with existing workflows. Open APIs also leave room for broader platform integration. The main boundary is scale and security scope: Standard supports up to 50 participants, and end-to-end encryption is not provided. Choose OpenTalk when deployment control, compliance-oriented voting, and self-hosting matter; choose an alternative when end-to-end encryption or larger verified meetings is essential.
