Our verdict on nnn
nnn is an open-source terminal file manager for command-line users who want to manage local and remote filesystems without leaving a terminal workflow. It supports Linux, macOS, Android through Termux, self-hosted environments, BSD, Haiku, Cygwin, and WSL. Its core covers directory navigation, multiple contexts, file selection, batch renaming, shell integration, and file picking, making it a fit for users who prefer keyboard-driven file operations over graphical tools.
Its strongest area is breadth within a lightweight terminal interface. Search-as-you-type filtering includes fuzzy and regex modes, while built-in and plugin-based previews help inspect files. Archive creation, listing, extraction, and mounting extend file handling beyond ordinary navigation. Disk-usage analysis, remote mounts through sshfs and rclone, and plugins for mounting, finding, diffing, uploads, and live previews give the product room to support more involved workflows. Linux and macOS support are complemented by Android use through Termux.
The main trade-off is its layout and platform scope. Native dual-pane operation is not documented; users who need side-by-side file management can achieve it with external terminal multiplexers instead. Windows is also outside the listed platform support. nnn is therefore a strong choice for established terminal workflows that value filtering, previews, archives, remote access, and shell integration in an open-source project. Users seeking a native dual-pane interface, Windows support, or AI-assisted file management should consider an alternative.
