Our verdict on NCover
NCover is a Windows-based code coverage suite for .NET developers, QA teams, and build environments. It supports C#, VB.NET, C++/CLI, and other .NET CLI languages, with coverage collection from applications and services. The product measures sequence-point, branch, method, condition, symbol, line, and cyclomatic complexity coverage. Visual Studio integration, source highlighting, filters, exclusions, and report generation make it suited to teams that want coverage data within established development and build workflows.
The plans divide collection, developer analysis, and centralized reporting. Collector costs $448 one-time and provides automated coverage collection for QA and build servers with a connection to Code Central. Bolt also costs $448 one-time and provides the Visual Studio coverage extension. Desktop costs $658 one-time, adding standalone developer coverage, a Visual Studio extension, and branch coverage visualization. Code Central costs $2298 one-time for a centralized coverage repository, team projects, trends, and compatibility with Collector. The published pricing includes one year of support and upgrades, and a 21-day free trial is available.
NCover’s main strength is its combination of build controls and historical analysis. HTML, XML, JSON, CSV, and NCover v3 XML reporting, JSON and XML data exchange, minimum coverage thresholds, trend graphs, and historical executions support teams that need repeatable coverage oversight. Code Central extends that model to centralized team coverage. The trade-off is a Windows-only footprint and a paid structure without a free plan. Teams already centered on Windows, .NET, Visual Studio, and Microsoft-oriented build tools should find the product aligned with their workflow. Teams needing broader platform coverage, a free tier, or a simpler single-product purchase should consider alternatives.
