Our verdict on Mox

Mox is an open-source, self-hosted email server for administrators operating mail for their own domains. It brings together SMTP sending and receiving, IMAP4 mailbox access, built-in webmail, reputation- and content-based junk filtering, account and alias management, and automatic TLS certificates. Its web interface and quickstart tooling support domain and DNS configuration, making it a fit for technically capable teams that want to run their own email infrastructure rather than use a vendor-operated service.

Its strongest case is the breadth of mail-server controls in a focused package. Mox supports SPF, DKIM, DMARC, DANE, and MTA-STS, while its administrative interface covers domains, accounts, and aliases. Web API access and webhooks add integration options, and Prometheus metrics plus structured logging support operational visibility. Maildir and mbox import and export also give administrators a path for mailbox administration and migration. Together, these features make Mox more than a basic SMTP service: it is a complete self-hosted mail stack with security, filtering, and management tooling.

The trade-off is platform scope and operational responsibility. Mox runs on the web, Linux, and self-hosted deployments, but it is designed around administration on a dedicated machine or virtual machine. Mobile apps are third-party, and calendar or mobile sync are not part of its stated feature set. The open-source model suits organizations that value control and can manage mail infrastructure; teams seeking a hosted service, built-in productivity-suite synchronization, or a broader client ecosystem should choose another type of email platform.
