    • Cloud coverage depends on available Terraform providers and Kusion modules
    • Its general-purpose configuration approach is less established

Our verdict on Kusion

Kusion is an open-source, intent-driven platform orchestrator for platform teams building internal developer portals. Platform engineers can define reusable modules and workspaces, while application developers describe workloads and dependencies through AppConfiguration. It supports Kubernetes resources and cloud or on-premises infrastructure through Terraform providers, with CLI and server-based workflows for application delivery, infrastructure provisioning, and developer self-service across standardized environments.

Its breadth is the main reason to consider it. Kusion combines intent-driven configuration with Kubernetes and Terraform runtimes, state storage, backend management, preview, apply, destroy, and release operations. Resource graphs and a centralized developer portal add visibility around managed resources, while importing existing cloud resources can support environments that are not starting from scratch. REST APIs provide a path for server integration, and self-hosted execution is available across Windows, macOS, and Linux workflows as well as API-based and self-hosted deployments.

The ecosystem spans Kubernetes, Terraform, AWS, AliCloud, Azure, Google Cloud, HashiCorp Vault, AWS Secrets Manager, Azure Key Vault, and AliCloud Secrets Manager. Cloud coverage is tied to available Terraform providers and Kusion modules, so implementation scope depends on those building blocks. Policy-as-code is supported through third-party tools rather than a native policy system. Kusion is a strong fit for platform teams that want open-source orchestration, reusable standards, and a developer portal around infrastructure and workloads. Teams seeking a more established general-purpose configuration approach or native policy integration may prefer an alternative.
