Our verdict on Pulumi
Pulumi is an open-source infrastructure-as-code platform for developers, platform engineers, and DevOps teams. It lets teams define and manage cloud infrastructure with TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, Go, .NET, Java, or YAML rather than relying on a domain-specific language. Its provider ecosystem covers AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, Kubernetes, SaaS infrastructure providers, and on-premises technologies. The platform includes a CLI, language SDKs, a deployment engine, and optional Pulumi Cloud services for state, collaboration, deployments, secrets, governance, and drift detection.
Pulumi's pricing supports a gradual start. The free Individual plan includes one user, IaC state management, unlimited projects, stacks, and environments, plus up to 500 workflow minutes. The Team plan costs $40 per month and adds up to 10 users, secure collaboration and CI/CD, resource search, webhooks, and automatic secrets rotation. Enterprise costs $400 per month and adds unlimited users, SAML/SSO, RBAC, audit logs, drift detection and remediation, and customer-managed keys. Business Critical adds self-hosting, built-in compliance, SCIM synchronization, audit log export, and available 24x7 enterprise support. A 14-day free trial is also available.
Its strongest fit is for organizations that want general-purpose language support without giving up infrastructure lifecycle management. Teams can use Pulumi Cloud or self-managed state backends such as object storage, PostgreSQL, and local filesystems, and can import existing resources into Pulumi state and code. Scheduled drift detection, optional remediation, policy as code, customer-managed deployment runners, and cloud-hosted CI/CD workflows extend its operational scope. Integrations include GitHub, GitLab, Azure DevOps, Bitbucket, CircleCI, Jenkins, and Google Cloud Build. Choose Pulumi for language flexibility and a broad feature set; consider an alternative if maximum platform coverage is the deciding factor.
