Our verdict on Kubewarden

Kubewarden is an open-source policy engine for Kubernetes policy authors and cluster operators. It runs policies as WebAssembly modules in a Kubernetes admission webhook, evaluating admission requests so teams can accept, reject, or mutate them. The project supports Kubernetes resources and admission requests in YAML or JSON, with policy authoring available in Rust, Go, CEL, Rego, and other languages that target WebAssembly. Its strongest fit is for teams that want admission control, runtime enforcement, and policy testing within a Kubernetes-centered workflow.

Its policy lifecycle covers more than admission decisions. The kwctl command-line tool supports policy testing and dry runs, while policies can be distributed through OCI-compliant registries and integrated with GitHub Actions and Helm. Kubewarden also provides background auditing for resources already deployed in a cluster. Findings can be stored in OpenReports or PolicyReport custom resources, giving teams a reporting path alongside live admission enforcement. The WebAssembly model gives teams a common execution format while preserving several authoring-language options.

Kubewarden is a strong choice for Kubernetes teams that need open-source admission validation, rejection, mutation, testing, reporting, and supply-chain verification in one policy workflow.
