Our verdict on Azure Policy
Azure Policy is Microsoft’s governance service for defining, assigning, and evaluating rules against Azure resources. It suits teams that need centralized control over compliance across management groups, subscriptions, resource groups, and individual resources. Policies use JSON definitions and can be grouped into initiatives, giving governance teams a structured way to apply standards across different scopes.
The service is offered at no additional cost to Azure subscribers. Its integrations support policy-as-code workflows across GitHub, Azure DevOps, Azure CLI, Azure PowerShell, REST API, Azure Resource Graph, ARM templates, Bicep, and Terraform. Microsoft documents source control, testing, CI/CD validation, and staged enforcement workflows, so teams can manage policy changes alongside infrastructure code. Related Azure resources and services may incur separate charges, which keeps the policy service free while leaving the surrounding environment subject to its own costs.
Azure Policy’s main depth is in enforcement and lifecycle management. Teams can audit or deny non-compliant changes, modify resources, deploy related resources, and remediate existing non-compliant resources automatically or in bulk. A compliance dashboard and per-resource details provide visibility into results. This makes it a strong fit for Azure governance teams that need both admission control and ongoing remediation. It is less suitable for organizations seeking one policy layer across multiple cloud platforms, or for teams that do not want to work with JSON-based definitions and Azure-specific integrations.
