Our verdict on IBM Cloud Container Registry
IBM Cloud Container Registry is a managed private registry for storing and distributing container images within IBM Cloud accounts. It is aimed at teams running IBM Cloud Kubernetes Service or Red Hat OpenShift on IBM Cloud, as well as workflows built around Docker, Podman, Skopeo, and Buildah. Docker and OCI image support, namespaces, IAM-based access control, and API or CLI access give teams a controlled way to manage images across deployment environments. Global and regional registry instances support different placement needs, while private network connections are available through Virtual Private Endpoints.
The freemium structure gives teams a way to start with the Free plan, which includes 500 MB of image storage, 5 GB of pull traffic per month, and the default plan for the first namespace. The Standard plan moves to unlimited image storage and unlimited pull traffic, with storage billed by GB-Months and pull traffic billed by GB usage per month. That makes the paid tier more suitable for growing image libraries and active delivery pipelines, although costs will follow usage rather than a fixed published allowance. Teams should estimate storage and traffic patterns before moving beyond the free allocation.
Security and lifecycle controls are a central strength. Vulnerability Advisor image scanning, Red Hat image signing and integrity verification, IAM-based namespace and image access control, and automated retention policies cover assessment, trust, access, and cleanup. The registry also supports multi-region use, but active cross-region copies require users to push images to multiple registry regions. Immutable tags are not part of the listed capabilities, so teams that require immutable release references should consider an alternative or add controls elsewhere. Pick IBM Cloud Container Registry for IBM-centered container workflows; look elsewhere if immutable tags are essential.
