Our verdict on HeidiSQL
HeidiSQL is a free, open-source desktop database client for Windows, Linux, and macOS. It is designed for people who work with MariaDB, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, SQLite, Interbase, Firebird, ProxySQL, or Redshift and want one graphical interface for database work. Multiple database connections can be managed in one window, while table data can be browsed and edited in a grid. The client also supports creating and editing tables, views, stored routines, triggers, and scheduled events.
Its strongest case is the breadth of database administration and data-handling features available without a paid plan. The SQL editor includes syntax highlighting and code completion, and a query-tab helper panel provides query history. SSH tunneling and SSL connection settings support different connection requirements. Import covers SQL, CSV, and binary files, while export supports SQL, CSV, HTML, XML, LaTeX, Textile, PHP, Markdown, and JSON. User privilege and role management, plus table maintenance for optimization and repair, extend it beyond basic query execution.
The main trade-off is its desktop-focused design. HeidiSQL is not a browser-based service, and its stated workflow is centered on direct SQL editing, object management, and table administration rather than visual query construction. That makes it a practical fit for individual developers, database administrators, and technical teams who prefer a free client with broad export options and support for several common engines. It is less suitable for buyers seeking a web application or a workflow organized around visual query building. Choose HeidiSQL when open-source desktop access and database-management depth matter more than a browser-first experience.
