Where it wins
- Manages Google Cloud resources through Kubernetes Custom Resource Definitions
- Supports resource adoption, export, reconciliation, and drift detection
- Connects with Policy Controller, OPA Gatekeeper, Secrets, and Prometheus
Where it doesn't
- Supports Google Cloud rather than multiple cloud providers
- Requires self-hosted Kubernetes for its core state-management model
- Resource charges still apply for Google Cloud infrastructure created
Our verdict on Google Config Connector
Google Config Connector is an open-source Kubernetes add-on for managing Google Cloud resources as Kubernetes objects. Platform teams and cloud-native development teams can define desired infrastructure in YAML or JSON, apply it with kubectl, and reconcile that state against Google Cloud APIs. The product is designed for organizations that already use Kubernetes as a control plane and want infrastructure workflows to align with namespaces, RBAC, events, and Secrets.
Its strongest fit is the combination of Google Cloud integration and Kubernetes-native policy and operations. Config Connector provides Custom Resource Definitions for Google Cloud resources, supports asynchronous reconciliation, and can create, update, delete, acquire, and export resources. It integrates with Google Kubernetes Engine, Google Cloud APIs, Cloud Asset Inventory, Policy Controller, OPA Gatekeeper, and Prometheus. Kubernetes Secrets can hold sensitive resource data, while structured controller logs and Prometheus monitoring support operational visibility. This makes the product more suitable for Google Cloud estates governed through Kubernetes than for teams seeking a cloud-neutral infrastructure layer.
Config Connector itself is open source, with no product subscription or paid plan described. Costs arise from the Google Cloud resources created through it. Installation can be manual, through a GKE add-on, or through Config Controller, while the core state-management model uses a Kubernetes cluster and manifests. Teams should choose it when Google Cloud specialization, resource adoption, policy integration, and Kubernetes-based reconciliation are priorities. It is a less suitable choice for teams that need multi-cloud support or do not want to operate Kubernetes as part of their infrastructure management process.
