Our verdict on Google Ad Exchange (Authorized Buyers)

Google Ad Exchange (Authorized Buyers) connects eligible buyers with publishers selling digital ad inventory. It is aimed at ad networks, agency trading desks and demand-side platforms buying on behalf of multiple advertisers, with buyers bidding on impression-level requests through their own bidder systems. The exchange supports display, video, native and interstitial formats across web and mobile app channels, and access is through an API rather than a listed self-service interface.

For teams with technical buying infrastructure, its protocol and deal controls are central strengths. Real-time bidding uses Google's Real-Time Bidding protocol, with OpenRTB integrations available in JSON or Protobuf. Buyers can also manage private auctions, preferred deals and programmatic guaranteed deals. Pretargeting selects eligible bid requests, while cookie matching links bidder IDs with Google user IDs. These capabilities make the platform relevant for buyers who need to control which requests reach their bidder and participate in both auction and negotiated deal types; it is less suited to advertisers seeking a simple campaign interface.

Operationally, the Buyer REST API covers account information, creative verification, deals and pretargeting configurations. Google Ad Manager and Google AdMob are listed integrations, and publisher inventory and deal availability are configured in Google Ad Manager. Pricing is contact-sales rather than a published plan; buyer API access may require contacting an account manager. Documentation and email are support channels. Established mid-market and enterprise buying organizations with a bidder and exchange operations capacity are the clearest fit; smaller advertisers without that infrastructure should consider a more direct buying route.
