Our verdict on GitUp

GitUp is a free, open-source graphical client for Git repositories on macOS. It is aimed at engineers and Git newcomers who want a visual interface for local repository operations. The application presents branches and merges through an interactive repository graph, while also supporting commit rewriting, visual splitting, cherry-picking, merging, and rebasing. It works directly with the repository database rather than invoking the Git binary.

Its strongest area is visual control over repository history. GitUp provides unlimited undo and redo for many repository operations, along with Time Machine-like repository snapshots and rollback. Live updates reflect repository changes made outside the application, helping the graph stay current during work across tools. Search spans branches, tags, commits, authors, messages, and diff contents, while quick commit-message and diff previews support faster navigation. These features make GitUp a fit for users who want to inspect and revise local history without relying only on command-line workflows.

GitUp also keeps its pricing model straightforward: it is free and open source, with no paid tiers described. Git LFS support is available when the Git LFS command-line tool is installed, extending the client for repositories that use large-file handling. The main platform constraint is macOS-only availability, so teams needing a cross-platform desktop client should choose another option. GitUp is best suited to macOS users who value visual recovery, rollback, and history editing; users seeking AI assistance or broader platform coverage should look elsewhere.
