Our verdict on GitLab Merge Trains
GitLab Merge Trains queues merge requests so teams can validate changes in the order they are expected to merge. Each request's pipeline runs against the target branch and the changes from earlier requests in the train; a request merges only after its pipeline succeeds and earlier requests have merged. This makes the feature relevant to teams using GitLab CI/CD that want to catch conflicts between queued changes before they reach the target branch. It is available on GitLab.com, GitLab Self-Managed, and GitLab Dedicated, and supports cloud or self-hosted deployment.
Parallel execution is the main operational distinction. Pipelines for queued requests can run in parallel, with a configurable maximum number per train; the documented default is 20. If a request's pipeline fails, GitLab removes that request from the train and restarts pipelines for later requests. That helps keep validation aligned with the revised queue, but teams should account for those reruns when failures occur. Requests can be added to a train using Merge or Set to auto-merge.
Access requires Premium or Ultimate. According to GitLab's published plans, Premium costs $29 per user per month with annual billing and includes merge trains; Ultimate also includes the feature, though its price is not specified here. There is no free plan for this feature. The GitLab-specific scope is a limitation for organizations coordinating repositories on GitHub or Bitbucket, which are not supported in the category specifications. Choose Merge Trains if your team already works in GitLab and needs ordered, parallel pipeline validation; consider another merge queue if cross-platform support or avoiding a paid GitLab tier is essential.
