  • Where it wins

    • Executable graphs coordinate builds, deployments, tests, and tasks.
    • Supports local and remote Kubernetes, Helm, Docker, and manifests.
    • Shared caching and remote builds support collaborative development workflows.
  • Where it doesn't

    • Free access has limited cache retention, cache hits, and remote build capacity.
    • Advanced access controls and secrets management require Enterprise.
    • Its workflow is specialized around Kubernetes application development.

Our verdict on Garden

Garden is an open-source DevOps automation tool for teams developing and testing Kubernetes applications. It represents infrastructure, container builds, deployments, services, tests, and tasks in an executable action graph, then uses that model to create development, testing, CI, and preview environments. The standalone command-line binary runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux, with support for both local and remote Kubernetes clusters.

Garden uses a freemium plan structure. The Free plan includes limited cache retention, cache hits, and remote build capacity. Team adds higher limits for shared caching and remote container building, along with team-wide caching through Garden Cloud. Enterprise adds secrets management and role-based access control and is available as a commercial Garden offering. This creates a clear progression from individual or small-scale evaluation to shared team workflows and controlled enterprise access.

Its strongest fit is for teams that want one dependency-aware workflow across Docker builds, Kubernetes deployments, Helm charts, Kubernetes manifests, tests, and live code synchronization. Garden can avoid unnecessary builds, deployments, and tests, while remote container building and shared layer caching support repeated team workflows. Integrations include Kubernetes, Helm, Docker, Terraform, Pulumi, GitHub, and GitLab. Preview and isolated development environments add value for teams managing parallel changes. Teams working primarily outside Kubernetes application development should look for a more general-purpose development workflow tool; teams already organized around Kubernetes and container delivery should consider Garden.
