Our verdict on FusionAuth

FusionAuth is a customer identity and access management platform for product and engineering teams building applications. It combines authentication, authorization, user management, application registration, multi-factor authentication, and API-driven integrations. Deployment options include self-hosted, on-premises, hybrid, air-gapped, and managed cloud environments. Its authentication stack covers OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, SAML v2, passkeys, passwordless login, and social and enterprise identity providers. Web, iOS, Android, API, and self-hosted environments are supported.

Pricing starts with Community, a free and unlimited self-hosted plan offering core authentication features and community support. Starter costs $162 per month when billed annually and adds premium authentication features, advanced MFA, breached password detection, machine-to-machine authentication, and basic hosting. Essentials costs $2,970 per month when billed annually, adding advanced connectivity, MFA, and security features, custom OAuth scopes, email support, and business hosting. Enterprise is listed at $2,970 per month when billed annually and adds advanced threat detection, SSO Tenant Manager, 24/7 support, and high-availability hosting. The displayed Starter price is based on a 1,000 monthly active user selector, with usage measured by monthly active users rather than a conventional seat limit.

FusionAuth suits teams that need control over deployment and a wide authentication and authorization surface. SCIM provisioning, lifecycle management, role-based and fine-grained authorization, contextual and risk-based MFA policies, webhooks, lambdas, and SDKs support applications with varied identity requirements. The Community plan is a strong fit when self-hosting and community support are acceptable. Teams needing hosted infrastructure, email support, high availability, 24/7 support, or advanced threat detection should consider the paid tiers. Organizations seeking a narrower, simpler authentication tool may find this broader platform unnecessary.
