Our verdict on FocusTrack

FocusTrack is desktop software for documenting and managing show lighting, including conventional and automated fixtures. It is aimed at lighting designers, programmers and production teams who need to record fixture focus and cue details and maintain or recreate a rig across touring, long-running, repertory or transferred productions. It supports Windows and macOS, and its 14-day free trial offers a way to evaluate the workflow before buying.

Its focus is the documentation around a lighting production rather than visual design: FocusTrack imports console show data and identifies fixture use across cues and positions. Teams can record focus, colors and gobos, then attach written notes and photographs. Cue lists also provide room for notes and cue photos. Support for ETC Eos, MA grandMA, MA grandMA2 and Strand 300/500-series consoles gives it a defined fit for productions using those systems. The software also stores rig and patch information, tracks maintenance and moving-light lamp changes, and includes PowerTrack for analyzing lighting power use. It is not a 3D design or live-previsualization tool, so teams seeking those capabilities should look elsewhere.

The published purchase options are one-time licenses: Student is $55 for people in full-time education, Single Show is $180 for a specific production, and Full is $350 for use by a person or organization on multiple shows. The current purchase page states a 300 lamp-focus-record limit per production for the student license, while the vendor's licensing details page states 350; its pricing page is dated 2017, so buyers should confirm terms with the vendor. Email is the listed support channel. FocusTrack suits teams whose priority is persistent focus, cue and rig documentation; it is a less suitable choice when the central requirement is live visualization or 3D lighting design.
