About this tool
Characters like < and & have special meaning in HTML, so showing them as text means writing them as entities (< and &). Encoding escapes the five characters that matter — & < > " and ' — which is what you need to paste a code sample into a web page or an attribute value safely.
Tick "Also encode non-ASCII" to turn every accented letter, symbol and emoji into a numeric entity (é → é), useful for systems that mangle anything outside plain ASCII.
Decoding handles decimal (©) and hexadecimal (©) entities for every character, plus the common named ones ( , ©, —, … and more). Unknown names are left exactly as typed.
