Our verdict on Vectorworks Spotlight
Vectorworks Spotlight brings lighting and scenic design into a desktop CAD workflow for entertainment professionals. It covers 2D drafting and 3D modeling, lighting layouts, instrument and truss libraries, DMX patching, and production documentation. That makes it a fit for designers who need to develop a design and carry it through to plots, equipment information, and visualization, rather than a narrow tool for drawing light plots alone.
The workflow extends from design into paperwork: Spotlight automates light plots, numbering, equipment summary keys, and label legends, and generates schedules, inventories, estimates, and equipment lists. Scenic build drawings can include floor plans, dimensions, and material details. For visualization, Showcase provides real-time previsualization with live DMX control, plus DMX stream recording and playback. These linked capabilities will suit productions where drawings, documentation, and a view of the lighting design need to stay together; designers who only need basic drafting may not need that breadth.
Platform and exchange options support teams working across lighting and production systems. Spotlight runs on Windows and macOS, supports Project Sharing, and imports and exports GDTF and MVR data.
