Our verdict on Finch

Finch is an open-source command-line tool for local container development, aimed at developers who need to build, run, pull, push, and publish Linux containers and OCI images. It packages a native client with Lima, nerdctl, containerd, and BuildKit, while supporting macOS, Windows, and Linux. Its scope fits individual developers and teams that want a local container workflow without adopting a paid product tier.

The strongest part of Finch is its fit with the container tooling ecosystem. BuildKit handles Docker and OCI image builds, containerd and nerdctl run local containers, and registry support covers image pulls and pushes. Compose supports multi-container applications, while Visual Studio Code Dev Containers connects the environment to an established development workflow. Finch can also build and run images for amd64 and arm64 architectures, which is useful when local development spans different CPU targets.

Finch also includes local virtual-machine lifecycle management and controls for CPU, memory, boot-disk, and data-disk resources. Cosign support adds image signing and verification to the local workflow. The main boundary is its focus on container development rather than a documented local Kubernetes cluster product: its materials mention experimental support for containers created with Kubernetes, but do not describe local cluster creation or a supported cluster topology. Choose Finch for open-source, containerd-centered development with Compose and Dev Containers. Teams seeking a Kubernetes environment with documented cluster setup, or a graphical desktop-first experience, should consider a different tool.
