Our verdict on Dowse
Dowse is a Windows desktop application for people who want local search across folders they choose. It indexes filenames and supported file contents, including plain text, Markdown, source code, text-layer PDFs, and DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX files. For image files, Windows OCR recognizes text in PNG, JPG, WebP, and BMP formats locally. That makes Dowse a fit for solo users and small teams seeking a focused way to find content in selected local folders, rather than a broad search across a whole device or communication tools.
Search includes phrases and filters for paths, extensions, dates, and file sizes; results can be previewed, filtered by type, and sorted. Live file-change watching keeps the index responsive to updates, while startup reconciliation checks for changes when the application starts. The scope is deliberately folder-based: users add the locations they want indexed. Dowse does not search email or messages, and its image OCR does not cover image-only scanned pages inside PDFs. Choose it when local file search and OCR for supported image files matter more than searching across every location or content type.
Dowse is open source and described as designed for local, offline file search. A command-line interface and read-only MCP server use the same index, with the MCP server exposing search and index status. The published product information describes a free offering and no paid tiers, so there is no plan ladder to compare. Documentation and community are the listed support channels. Dowse is a reasonable option for Windows users who want a no-cost, self-scoped index; choose another tool if you need macOS support, email or message search, or OCR for scanned PDF pages.
