Our verdict on Docker Mailserver

Docker Mailserver is an open-source, containerized email server for organizations and individuals that want to operate their own mail infrastructure. It combines Postfix for SMTP with Dovecot-based mailbox access and supports IMAP, optional POP3, SMTP authentication, LDAP account provisioning and OAuth2 authentication. Deployment is designed for Docker Compose, Kubernetes or Podman, making it suited to engineers who prefer configurable infrastructure over a hosted mailbox service.

Its strongest area is the breadth of mail-server controls in one deployable stack. Administrators can configure spam filtering through Rspamd, SpamAssassin and Postgrey, add ClamAV antivirus scanning, and manage DKIM, DMARC and TLS certificates, including Let’s Encrypt. Mailbox quotas and aliases cover common administration needs, while Fetchmail and Getmail retrieve messages from external mailboxes. The file- and environment-variable configuration model avoids requiring a SQL database and gives technical teams direct control over provisioning and policy.

The trade-off is operational ownership. Storage is managed on the host, with the documented default mailbox size limit set to unlimited and the default message size set to approximately 10 MB. Configuration is also required for optional capabilities such as POP3, so the product fits teams prepared to manage deployment details and mail infrastructure directly. Engineers needing a flexible, self-hosted stack should shortlist it; organizations seeking a turnkey hosted email service or a simpler administration model should consider alternatives.
