Our verdict on Django-OCI

Django-OCI is an open-source Django module for implementing an OCI-compliant container registry. It is aimed at Python developers who want to embed registry functionality inside a Django project rather than adopt a separate hosted registry service. The module exposes OCI distribution-spec API endpoints for container image interactions, including push and pull workflows, repositories, image manifests, blobs, tags, and annotations. It can run locally or as part of a container-orchestrated registry, with Django and Django REST Framework listed as its ecosystem integrations.

Its strongest area is the registry protocol and image workflow layer. Django-OCI supports monolithic and chunked blob uploads, configurable content types and manifest media types, filesystem storage, Docker-style token authentication, and immutable tags. Distribution-spec conformance testing support gives teams a way to assess compatibility with the targeted registry specification. For a Django application that needs registry endpoints and wants these behaviors within its own codebase, the feature set is focused and relevant. The trade-off is implementation responsibility: this is a self-hosted module, so the surrounding application and deployment must provide the operational environment.

Django-OCI is best suited to teams comfortable extending and operating Django-based infrastructure. It is less suitable for buyers seeking a ready-made registry product with a browsing interface or a broader set of registry operations. The published project description identifies it as under development, and its scope centers on distribution endpoints, storage, authentication, and image metadata. Teams that need image scanning, replication, retention policies, storage quotas, or image-size controls should consider a more operations-oriented alternative. Choose Django-OCI when embedding registry capabilities in Django is the priority; choose another option when managed administration or a wider platform feature set matters more.
