Our verdict on Depence
Depence is desktop software for designing, visualizing and controlling multimedia shows. It is aimed at lighting and show designers who need to coordinate stage lighting with fountains, lasers, video and special effects in a real-time 3D environment. Its scope also includes timeline-based programming, lighting plots and multi-page PDF documentation, making it relevant to both show preparation and production paperwork. The stated minimum system requirement is a 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 computer.
A defining strength is the breadth of the visualization and control workflow. Depence can receive DMX from external consoles through Art-Net and ACN, and its integrations include grandMA Viz-Key, Pangolin Beyond, LA Sollinger, NDI, DMX-RDM, sACN, SMPTE, MIDI, Modbus, RS232 and PosiStageNet. Designers can import 3D models in formats such as FBX, COLLADA, 3DS, OBJ and SKP, and use keyframe animation, camera paths, node-based logic and interactive automation. This makes it a fit for productions that combine several kinds of show elements, rather than lighting-only work.
Licensing is modular: optional modules cover visualization, animation and show control, and licenses are perpetual one-time purchases that may be combined. The lowest-priced listed module is Laser at €800; that is a starting point for a module, not a stated price for every configuration. Shows can also be played back on Syncronorm V:Server or V:Nano hardware. The trade-off is the investment in paid modules and the Windows-only desktop requirement.
