Our verdict on Crossplane

Crossplane is an open-source control plane framework built on Kubernetes for platform engineering teams. It lets teams define custom APIs and declarative abstractions for infrastructure and cloud-native software, then connect those abstractions to external services through provider packages. Its model fits organizations that want Kubernetes to serve as a consistent interface for infrastructure across AWS, Azure, and GCP.

The platform’s strongest advantage is its Kubernetes ecosystem fit. Managed resources represent external services, while compositions combine multiple resources into reusable APIs. Composition functions and pipelines extend that model with YAML, KCL, Python, and Go. Continuous reconciliation supports drift correction, and existing external resources can be imported. Kubernetes RBAC and OPA Gatekeeper integration add policy enforcement, while Argo CD can fit into a declarative delivery workflow. Configuration uses YAML or JSON, and state management and execution remain self-hosted.

Crossplane is a focused choice for teams willing to operate a Kubernetes-based control plane and shape infrastructure around platform APIs. It is less suitable for organizations seeking a hosted infrastructure-as-code service, a conventional commercial plan structure, or an experience that avoids Kubernetes operations. Provider support and management-policy capabilities can vary by provider, so teams should evaluate the specific external services they need. Choose Crossplane when reusable abstractions, multi-cloud control, reconciliation, and Kubernetes-native workflows are central requirements; choose an alternative when a narrower tool or managed execution model better matches the team’s operating approach.
