Where it wins
- Isolates multiple Compose or bare-service environments per project
- Routes ports dynamically or canonically across worktree runtimes
- Supports shared volumes, SSH remotes, and Cursor Parallel Agents
Where it doesn't
- Desktop support is limited to macOS and Linux
- Requires Docker for Compose-based development environments
- Configuration uses Coastfile TOML rather than a graphical setup
Our verdict on Coasts
Coasts is a free, MIT-licensed local development runtime for running multiple isolated environments for the same project. It is aimed at developers and AI coding workflows that use Git worktrees, including projects built with Docker Compose. Each Coast can receive separate ports, services, volumes, and worktree assignments, helping parallel development avoid runtime conflicts. Coasts runs on macOS and Linux, with support for self-hosted remote machines through SSH.
Its main strength is breadth within parallel environment management. Coasts supports Docker Compose stacks inside Docker-in-Docker runtimes, while also accommodating bare services without Docker Compose. Developers can assign runtimes to Git worktrees, use dynamic or canonical port routing, and choose between shared and isolated services and volumes. Coastfile-based TOML configuration provides a defined way to describe environments, and the integration with Cursor Parallel Agents connects the runtime model to AI coding workflows.
Coasts fits teams and individual developers who need several isolated versions of one project running at the same time, particularly when worktrees are central to the workflow. Remote runtimes over SSH extend the setup beyond a single machine, while the local-first design keeps the primary workflow on the developer's own system. It is less suitable for users who need Windows desktop support or prefer a graphical environment manager. Choose Coasts when Git worktrees, Compose support, port routing, and isolated services are central requirements; consider another tool when broader desktop platform coverage is essential.
