Our verdict on CBL Data Shredder
CBL Data Shredder is a free disk-wiping utility from CBL Data Recovery for securely erasing hard drives and other digital storage devices. It is aimed at people who need to overwrite an entire drive before disposal, reuse, or transfer, particularly when bootable media is more useful than a desktop-only tool. The product includes a Windows version and bootable DOS packages in floppy-disk, CD-ROM ISO, and USB-creator formats.
Its main strength is the breadth of its overwrite controls. The Free plan provides complete low-level hard-drive formatting, customizable wipe methods, and government-level wiping of drive sectors. Users can select custom erase patterns and pass counts or choose documented methods including DoD 5220.22-M, German VSITR, the Bruce Schneier algorithm, the RCMP DSX method, and the Peter Gutmann algorithm with 35 passes. That combination gives the product a deeper focus on configurable disk overwriting than a basic single-method eraser.
The trade-off is its narrow scope and platform coverage. CBL Data Shredder targets entire-disk erasure rather than verified file or folder shredding, so it is not the right fit when selective deletion is the primary requirement. The documented Windows versions are Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 10, while the bootable options use DOS-oriented packages. Choose it for free, configurable drive wiping with multiple recognized methods and bootable media; choose another tool when you need file-level shredding or broader modern platform support.
