Our verdict on Calibre-Web
Calibre-Web is a self-hosted web application for browsing, reading, organizing, and downloading ebooks stored in a Calibre database. It suits individuals and small teams that want a private library accessible through a responsive HTML5 interface, with support for TXT, PDF, EPUB, KEPUB, CBZ, CBT, CBR, DJVU, and DJV files. Readers can use in-browser reading, OPDS feeds, advanced search, custom shelves, and email delivery to ereaders, while administrators can manage metadata, users, and per-user permissions.
Its strongest fit is the Calibre-centered ecosystem. Calibre-Web can download metadata through extensible plugins, convert ebooks through Calibre binaries, synchronize with Kobo devices, and connect with Google Drive. Authentication options include LDAP, Google OAuth, GitHub OAuth, and proxy authentication, giving administrators several ways to fit the library into an existing environment. These capabilities make it more than a browser bookshelf, but they also favor users who are comfortable maintaining a self-hosted application and its related components.
The project is free and open source, with deployment available through pip or Docker on self-hosted environments, alongside web, Windows, macOS, and Linux access. Community support and documentation are the primary support channels. Calibre-Web is a strong choice for private-library administrators who value control, format flexibility, Kobo synchronization, and permissions. It is less suitable for readers seeking a hosted service with vendor-managed operations or for teams that do not want to maintain the deployment and Calibre-based conversion workflow.
