The best eBook reader apps for Android depend on where your books come from: Kindle is best for Amazon purchases, Libby for library loans, ReadEra for free local files, Google Play Books for Google purchases and uploads, Kobo for Kobo users, and Moon+ Reader Pro for advanced customization. No single app handles every ecosystem equally well.

The most important choice is not the app with the longest format list. It is whether you need a bookstore and library account, or a reader for files you already own. Kindle, Google Play Books, Kobo, and Libby manage content inside their own ecosystems; ReadEra, Moon+ Reader, and Librera primarily open local files.

Key takeaways

  • Amazon Kindle is the best Android app for readers who buy Kindle books or use Kindle Unlimited, but it is not a neutral DRM-free EPUB library.
  • Libby is the best free option for borrowing eBooks, audiobooks, and magazines through a participating library card, with offline downloads and progress synchronization.
  • ReadEra is the strongest simple free local reader for DRM-free EPUB, PDF, MOBI/AZW3, Word, DJVU, FB2, and other files because it is ad-free, offline, and requires no registration.
  • Google Play Books is the most flexible choice for Google purchases combined with personal EPUB and PDF uploads, although export depends on publisher permissions.
  • Moon+ Reader Pro and Librera are better than store apps for customization, text-to-speech, PDFs, comics, annotations, and unusual formats, but both require more setup.

Which eBook reader app is best for Android?

Kindle is best for Amazon books, Libby is best for library borrowing, ReadEra is best for most DRM-free local files, Google Play Books is best for Google purchases and personal uploads, Kobo is best for Kobo customers, Moon+ Reader Pro is best for deep customization, and Librera is best for PDFs, comics, text-to-speech, and unusual formats.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That recommendation is deliberately split by use case. A Kindle purchase, a library loan, and a downloaded EPUB may all be called “eBooks,” but they are not interchangeable. Digital rights management (DRM), account requirements, file formats, synchronization, and export permissions determine which app can actually open a book.

Store apps versus local-file readers: what is the difference?

Store and library apps obtain books through an ecosystem, while local-file readers open files already stored on your Android device or an accessible cloud location. The difference explains most compatibility surprises.

Type Apps Best for Main limitation
Store or library ecosystem Kindle, Google Play Books, Kobo, Libby Purchases, subscriptions, library loans, account-based notes, and cross-device reading Books may use DRM and may not open in another app
Local-file reader ReadEra, Moon+ Reader, Librera DRM-free EPUBs, PDFs, comics, textbooks, documents, and downloaded files Usually cannot unlock protected Kindle, Kobo, Google, or library books

A local reader may recognize an EPUB, MOBI, or AZW3 file and still reject the book if the file is encrypted. “Supports EPUB” normally means “supports compatible, usually DRM-free EPUB,” not “opens every EPUB purchased from every store.”

Quick comparison of the best eBook reader apps for Android

App Best for Content and DRM position Formats or reading strengths Sync and cost model Main drawback
Amazon Kindle Amazon purchases and Kindle subscriptions Amazon Kindle ecosystem; not a general-purpose reader for arbitrary protected or local files Commercial eBooks, magazines, comics, manga, samples, dictionary, notes, highlights, typography, and eligible Audible integration Account-based position, notes, highlights, and bookmarks; free app with books and subscriptions sold separately Amazon lock-in and limited portability
Libby Public-library borrowing Participating-library loans; some U.S. titles can be sent to Kindle eBooks, audiobooks, magazines, offline downloads, font and layout controls, dictionary, notes, and bookmarks Library-account synchronization and offline reading; free beyond library access Catalog, holds, loan periods, and Kindle transfer depend on the library and title license
Google Play Books Google purchases plus personal EPUB/PDF uploads Google ecosystem; export and portability depend on publisher permissions eBooks, audiobooks, comics, manga, EPUB/PDF uploads, shelves, notes, and offline reading Google-account sync across supported devices and web; individual purchases without a required subscription Not every purchased or rented book can be exported
Kobo Books Kobo purchases, Kobo Plus, and Kobo eReaders Kobo ecosystem and its DRM rules eBooks, audiobooks, Kobo Plus, adjustable typography, Night Mode, and audiobook controls Progress syncs between supported Kobo apps, web reader, and Kobo eReaders Kobo Plus and audiobook availability vary by market
ReadEra Simple free local-file reading Best suited to compatible DRM-free files EPUB, PDF, MOBI, AZW3, DOC/DOCX, RTF, DJVU, FB2, TXT, ODT, CHM, annotations, collections, and PDF controls Free, offline, ad-free, and no registration or internal purchase advertised No comparable commercial bookstore or automatic ecosystem library sync
Moon+ Reader Customizable reading without paying for Pro Local files; broad format support does not bypass DRM EPUB, PDF, DJVU, AZW3, MOBI, FB2, CBZ/CBR, DOCX, OPDS, gestures, themes, auto-scroll, annotations, and TTS-related features Cloud backup and position synchronization are advertised; free edition includes ads and in-app purchases Many settings can overwhelm casual readers
Moon+ Reader Pro Power users and advanced controls Local files; DRM restrictions still apply Additional customization, TTS, PDF annotation, themes, fonts, widgets, statistics, and sync capabilities The cited U.S. Google Play listing showed a $11.99 one-time purchase on August 18, 2026; prices can change Overkill if you only read ordinary EPUB novels
Librera PDFs, comics, TTS, and unusual formats Primarily local compatible files; no assumption of commercial DRM support PDF, EPUB/EPUB3, MOBI, DJVU, FB2, TXT, RTF, AZW/AZW3, HTML, ODT, XPS, CBZ/CBR, TIFF, OPDS, TTS, reflow, RTL, and Calibre libraries Offline local-library tools; free Play Store listing contains ads More utilitarian and complex than mainstream store apps

Is Amazon Kindle the best Android eBook app?

Amazon Kindle is the best Android eBook app for readers whose books come mainly from Amazon. The official Kindle Google Play listing describes a large commercial catalog, magazines, newspapers, comics, manga, samples, adjustable typography, dictionary and lookup tools, notes, highlights, Page Flip, reading-progress tools, cross-device synchronization, and Audible switching for eligible titles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Kindle is particularly practical if you alternate between an Android phone, a Kindle eReader, and other supported devices. Reading position, bookmarks, highlights, and notes are linked to the Amazon account rather than managed as ordinary files.

The trade-off is ecosystem dependence. Kindle books bought from Amazon are not generally portable to unrelated reader apps, and the Kindle app is not a universal EPUB or PDF library manager. The app is free to install, but books, subscriptions, and eligible audiobook services cost separately. Amazon’s listing also indicates ads and in-app purchases.

Choose Kindle if: you buy from Amazon, use Kindle Unlimited or Prime Reading, want mainstream titles and samples, or already own Kindle hardware. Choose another app if: you mainly read DRM-free files or want one neutral library for books from multiple stores.

Is Libby the best free eBook reader for Android?

Libby is the best free Android eBook app for readers with a participating public-library card. According to the Libby Google Play listing, readers can borrow eBooks, audiobooks, and magazines, download titles for offline use, stream when they want to save storage, sync progress across devices, adjust fonts and layouts, use a dictionary, highlight, add notes, and bookmark pages.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Libby is not a universal free catalog. A library card connects you to the titles licensed by your library or library consortium. A book may be unavailable because the library does not license it, another reader has borrowed its copy, the title is offered only as audio, or geographic and institutional licensing limits access.

Libby can send eligible library eBooks to Kindle in the United States, but Kindle transfer is not universal. The library, title, country, and license determine whether that option appears. Libby remains the primary reading app for loans that cannot be transferred.

Choose Libby if: your priority is borrowing legally at no additional book cost. Do not choose Libby as your only app if: you also need to open personal EPUBs, PDFs, comics, or store purchases.

What can Google Play Books do with EPUB and PDF files?

Google Play Books can combine Google purchases with personal EPUB and PDF uploads, making it a strong mixed-library choice for Android users. The Google Play Books app listing describes individual eBook and audiobook purchases, comics and manga, offline reading, shelves, adjustable text and brightness controls, synced notes, and reading across supported devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google Play Books is useful when a reader wants a managed cloud library rather than a folder of files. Personal EPUB and PDF uploads can be read across supported devices after Google processes the files. The service also supports notes associated with Google Drive according to its app listing.

Portability is conditional. Google’s export instructions state that some books cannot be exported, rented books cannot be exported, and export output may be EPUB, PDF, or an ACSM file depending on the title and publisher permissions. An ACSM file is a license file, not the readable book itself. Google also states that most Google Play books cannot be opened on a Kindle device.

Choose Google Play Books if: you buy individual Google titles and also upload personal EPUB or PDF files. Choose a local reader instead if: you need extensive file management, specialized PDF controls, comics support, or maximum typography customization.

Is Kobo Books the best Android reader for Kobo owners?

Kobo Books is the best Android reader for readers already invested in Kobo purchases, Kobo Plus, or Kobo eReaders. The Kobo Google Play listing describes eBooks, audiobooks, Kobo Plus plans, adjustable text size and style, Night Mode, and automatic progress synchronization between the Android app, Kobo Web Reader, and Kobo eReaders.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Kobo Plus and Kobo audiobook access are market-dependent. The Kobo app listing advertises more than 3 million eBooks and 400,000 audiobooks for Kobo Plus, but availability, catalog, plan structure, and audiobook support vary by country and title. Treat those figures as Kobo’s listing claims, not as a guarantee for every region.

Kobo purchases remain subject to Kobo’s account and DRM rules. Kobo’s Android app should not be treated as a universal local EPUB/PDF manager without checking current Kobo documentation for the specific import workflow you need.

Choose Kobo if: you already use Kobo hardware or prefer the Kobo store. Choose Google Play Books or a local reader if: your priority is mixing Google purchases or a large collection of independent, DRM-free files.

Is ReadEra the best free local eBook reader for Android?

ReadEra is the best free local eBook reader for most people with DRM-free personal files. According to the ReadEra Google Play listing, the app is free, offline, ad-free, does not require registration, and does not require internal purchases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ReadEra advertises support for EPUB, PDF, DOC, DOCX, RTF, MOBI, AZW3, DJVU, FB2, TXT, ODT, CHM, and other formats. The app also provides collections, bookmarks, notes, highlights, automatic page saving, font and margin controls, split-screen reading, PDF zoom, margin cropping, and single-column handling for double-page scanned documents.

ReadEra’s simplicity is its advantage. You can point it at files on an Android device and read without joining a bookstore. The limitation is that local organization is not the same as cloud-library synchronization. If the same book must appear on multiple devices, you may need to copy the file yourself through cloud storage, a computer, Calibre, WebDAV, or another file-management method.

ReadEra’s format list is an advertised capability, not independent rendering testing. Complex EPUB3 layouts, unusual fonts, damaged metadata, scanned PDFs, and malformed documents may not display perfectly. Most importantly, ReadEra should not be expected to open protected Kindle, Kobo, Google, or library books merely because the file extension looks familiar.

Choose ReadEra if: you want a clean, offline, ad-free reader for files you can legally open. Choose another app if: you need a commercial store, library borrowing, audiobook integration, or account-based cross-device sync.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Moon+ Reader Pro worth it on Android?

Moon+ Reader Pro is worth considering when customization, annotations, cloud synchronization, text-to-speech, and format breadth matter more than simplicity. The Moon+ Reader listing advertises support for EPUB, PDF, DJVU, AZW3, MOBI, FB2, PRC, CHM, CBZ, CBR, DOCX, ODT, RTF, TXT, HTML, archive formats, and OPDS catalogs.

Moon+ Reader focuses on control: themes, fonts, margins, line spacing, gesture actions, page-turn effects, automatic scrolling, brightness controls, volume-key or hardware controls, annotations, dictionary and translation tools, EPUB3 multimedia, and reading statistics. The app also advertises cloud backup and reading-position synchronization through Dropbox or WebDAV.

Moon+ Reader Pro adds or exposes further capabilities, including ad removal, text-to-speech, PDF annotation, additional themes and fonts, Bluetooth controls, password protection, widgets, reading statistics, and expanded synchronization or annotation features. The cited U.S. Google Play listing showed a $11.99 one-time purchase on August 18, 2026; Google Play prices vary by country, tax, promotion, and storefront, so verify the current price before buying.

The free edition is a sensible trial, but the settings can feel excessive for someone who only wants to open a novel. Moon+ Reader’s broad file-access explanation is relevant to privacy: file-management and annotation features may require broad access to files, so review Android’s current permission screen before granting access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Moon+ Reader Pro if: you want to tune nearly every part of the reading experience or need advanced local-file features. Choose ReadEra if: you want a simpler free reader with less configuration.

When is Librera better than Moon+ Reader?

Librera is the stronger specialist choice when PDFs, comics, text-to-speech, RTL text, or unusual legacy formats are central to your reading. The Librera Google Play listing advertises PDF, EPUB and EPUB3, MOBI, DJVU, FB2, TXT, RTF, AZW and AZW3, HTML, ODT, XPS, CBZ and CBR, TIFF, PDB, MHT, OPDS, and other formats.

Librera also lists text-to-speech, dictionaries, notes, bookmarks, PDF text reflow, page splitting, drawing, comments, password-protected PDFs, comic support, right-to-left reading, offline Calibre libraries, and EPUB3 multimedia. Those tools make Librera a better fit for a mixed document collection than a store app designed mainly around purchased novels.

Librera’s interface is more utilitarian and may require more learning. The free Play Store listing contains ads, and its developer-provided data-safety disclosures should be reviewed by privacy-conscious readers because those disclosures can change over time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Librera if: a reading library includes scanned documents, comics, academic PDFs, or uncommon formats. Choose Moon+ Reader Pro if: interface customization and gesture-driven reading are more important than specialist document tools.

Which app should you choose for EPUB, PDF, MOBI, and AZW3?

Choose an app based on both the file format and the kind of content inside the file. File extensions identify containers or formats; they do not prove that an app can decrypt, render, or synchronize the book.

What you want to read Best starting app Why Important qualification
Reflowable novels in DRM-free EPUB ReadEra Simple, offline, ad-free, and broad local-file support Complex EPUB3 features may render differently between apps
Amazon Kindle purchases Kindle Account-based access, synchronization, notes, highlights, and Amazon features An unencrypted AZW3 file is not the same as a protected Kindle purchase
Library eBooks Libby Borrowing, offline downloads, and library-linked synchronization Catalog and transfer options depend on the library and title license
Google purchases and personal EPUB/PDF uploads Google Play Books Combines store content and uploaded files with Google-account access Export is controlled by publisher permissions; rentals cannot be exported
Kobo purchases or Kobo Plus Kobo Books Syncs with Kobo apps, web reader, and Kobo eReaders Kobo Plus and audiobooks vary by market
Textbooks, scanned documents, or academic PDFs Librera or Moon+ Reader Pro Reflow, cropping, page splitting, annotation, and layout controls A scan may contain images rather than selectable text
Comics and manga files Librera or Moon+ Reader CBZ/CBR support and page-oriented controls Store-bought comics may still be protected by ecosystem DRM
MOBI, AZW3, FB2, DJVU, or other legacy files ReadEra, Moon+ Reader, or Librera Each advertises broad local-format support Test a representative file; format support does not guarantee perfect rendering or DRM access

Why does EPUB usually work better than PDF on a phone?

EPUB usually works better for novels on a phone because EPUB text reflows to fit the screen, while PDF preserves a fixed page layout. A PDF is preferable when the original page design matters, such as for textbooks, manuals, comics, forms, or scanned books.

PDF quality depends on the source. A PDF with selectable text can support search, reflow, or text-to-speech more effectively than a scanned PDF made entirely from page images. On a small phone, fixed-layout PDFs may require repeated zooming and panning.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For PDF-heavy reading, look for single-column mode, text reflow, margin cropping, page splitting, landscape orientation, annotation, and handwriting tools. ReadEra advertises PDF margin cropping and single-column handling for double-page scans. Librera advertises PDF text reflow, page splitting, drawing, comments, password-protected PDF support, and annotations.

Can a local Android reader open DRM-protected books?

Usually not. A local Android reader can open a supported file format without being able to open an encrypted commercial or library book. Kindle purchases, Kobo purchases, Google Play books, and library loans may require the original app or an officially supported transfer route.

Google’s export guidance explains that some Google Play Books cannot be exported, rented books cannot be exported, and a permitted export may produce EPUB, PDF, or an ACSM license file depending on publisher settings. Readers should use the seller’s authorized workflow for ACSM or other protected content.

Do not use DRM removal instructions as a routine compatibility fix. Circumventing DRM may breach terms of service or copyright law depending on jurisdiction and purpose. The safe rule is simple: use the store or library app unless the rights holder explicitly provides an export or transfer option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do reading apps synchronize books and annotations?

Ecosystem apps generally synchronize account-based reading data more automatically than local readers, but “sync” can mean different things. A service may synchronize reading position while leaving the underlying file, annotations, shelves, or audiobook position separate.

App Reading-position sync Notes and highlights Underlying local files
Kindle Strong cross-device ecosystem sync Bookmarks, notes, and highlights are advertised Amazon-managed content; arbitrary local files are not treated like Kindle purchases
Libby Automatic progress sync across devices is advertised Highlights, notes, and bookmarks are available in the app Library downloads remain subject to loan and app rules
Google Play Books Syncs across supported devices and web Synced notes are advertised Personal EPUB/PDF uploads are processed by Google; file export remains conditional
Kobo Syncs between app, web reader, and Kobo eReaders Account ecosystem features vary by title and device Not a general promise of arbitrary local-file synchronization
Moon+ Reader Cloud backup and position synchronization are advertised using Dropbox/WebDAV Pro expands or exposes additional sync and annotation features Readers may still need to place the same book file on every device
ReadEra Primarily local and offline; do not assume ecosystem cloud sync Local bookmarks, notes, and highlights are advertised File copying or separate cloud management may be required between devices
Librera Primarily local-library use Local notes and bookmarks are advertised Calibre, OPDS, or separate file-management workflows may be needed

If synchronization stops working, confirm that every device uses the same account, synchronization is enabled, the book belongs to the same ecosystem, and the device has recently connected to the internet. Android battery optimization can also interfere with background activity. A sideloaded file may not sync even when a store-bought book does.

What should different types of Android readers install?

Reader profile Recommended setup Reason
Mostly Amazon books Kindle Best access to Amazon purchases, subscriptions, notes, and cross-device reading
Mostly public-library books Libby, with Kindle as an optional U.S. transfer destination Library borrowing and offline reading without buying each title
Mostly downloaded EPUBs ReadEra Free, ad-free, offline, and no registration
EPUB plus extensive customization Moon+ Reader Pro More control over typography, gestures, themes, scrolling, annotations, and TTS
PDFs, comics, scans, and unusual formats Librera Strong advertised support for PDF tools, comics, TTS, RTL, and legacy formats
Google purchases plus personal uploads Google Play Books One Google-linked library for purchases and uploaded EPUB/PDF files
Kobo eReader owner Kobo Books Designed to synchronize with Kobo’s app, web reader, and eReaders

Using more than one app is often the most practical arrangement. For example, Kindle can handle Amazon purchases, Libby can handle library loans, and ReadEra or Moon+ Reader can handle DRM-free personal files. No single app can reliably replace every store, library, and local-file workflow because DRM and licensing rules differ.

What should you check before installing an Android eBook reader?

  1. Identify the source. Decide whether the book is from Amazon, Google, Kobo, a public library, a public-domain site, or your own file collection.
  2. Check whether the file is DRM-free. A visible EPUB, MOBI, or AZW3 extension does not prove that another app can open it.
  3. Match the reader to the format. Use a reflowable EPUB reader for novels and a PDF-specialist app for textbooks, scans, manuals, and comics.
  4. Separate sync requirements. Ask whether you need position, notes, shelves, audiobook progress, and the actual files to synchronize.
  5. Check accessibility tools. Look for text size, font choice, line spacing, high-contrast themes, text-to-speech, PDF reflow, RTL support, and screen-reader compatibility.
  6. Review the business model. A free app may sell books, display ads, require a library card, or offer a paid upgrade. ReadEra advertises no ads and no internal purchases; Librera’s Play Store listing contains ads; Moon+ Reader Pro is a paid upgrade.
  7. Review privacy and permissions. Check whether the app requires an account, uploads books or annotations, collects or shares data, or requests broad file access. Store data-safety panels are developer-provided snapshots and can change.

Common Android eBook reader problems and fixes

Why can’t the app open my EPUB?

Confirm that the download is really an EPUB and not an ACSM license file, a damaged download, or a renamed file with a different format. Try the original seller’s app if the book came from a store or library. If a second local reader also rejects the file, download it again from the authorized source and avoid unlicensed copies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can’t Moon+ Reader or ReadEra open my Kindle book?

The Kindle book is probably protected by DRM. The local reader may support unencrypted AZW3 or MOBI files without supporting encrypted Kindle purchases. Open the book in Kindle or use an officially provided export or transfer method.

Why is my PDF unreadable on a phone?

Try landscape orientation, text reflow, single-column mode, margin cropping, or page splitting. If the PDF is a scan, its pages may be images rather than selectable text. An Android tablet is often more practical for large fixed-layout textbooks and academic papers.

Why is a library book missing from Libby?

Libby’s catalog is library-specific. The title may not be licensed to your library, may be checked out, may be available only in another format, or may be restricted by geographic or institutional licensing. Search using every library card you legitimately hold if your libraries support that arrangement.

Why is reading progress not synchronizing?

Use the same account on each device, enable sync, connect the device to the internet, and confirm that the title belongs to the same ecosystem. For local readers, synchronize the book file separately when necessary. Also check whether Android battery optimization is preventing background activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should you use an Android eBook app or a dedicated eReader?

Use an Android app when convenience, phone access, library borrowing, audiobooks, or multiple reading services matter; consider a dedicated eReader when long reading sessions, an e-ink display, and fewer phone distractions matter more. The right dedicated device depends on the ecosystem: Kindle hardware fits Amazon readers, Kobo hardware fits Kobo readers, and Android e-ink tablets can offer access to several compatible apps.

Hardware is not a universal portability solution. A dedicated eReader still may not open books protected by a competing store, and a large tablet may be better than an e-ink device for color comics, complex PDFs, or multimedia EPUB3 content. Choose the device around your main content source and screen requirements.

Which Android eBook reader is the final choice?

Start with the source of your books rather than an app-store rating. Install Kindle for Amazon, Libby for participating-library loans, Google Play Books for Google purchases and uploads, Kobo for Kobo’s ecosystem, ReadEra for straightforward DRM-free files, Moon+ Reader Pro for deep customization, or Librera for document-heavy and unusual-format collections.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best free eBook reader for Android?

ReadEra is the best free local-file reader for most DRM-free EPUB and PDF collections because it advertises offline reading, no ads, no registration, and broad format support. Libby is the best free ecosystem app when the reader has a participating library card and wants loans rather than personal files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can ReadEra open Kindle books?

ReadEra can open compatible local formats such as MOBI and AZW3, but that does not mean it can open DRM-protected Kindle purchases. Protected Kindle books generally need the Kindle app or an authorized Amazon transfer or export route.

Can Google Play Books upload EPUB and PDF files?

Yes. Google Play Books supports personal EPUB and PDF uploads for reading across supported devices, but export is not guaranteed. Google says that publisher permissions determine export availability and that rented books cannot be exported.

Which Android eBook app is best for PDFs?

Librera is the strongest specialist choice in this comparison for PDF-heavy collections because its listing advertises text reflow, page splitting, drawing, comments, password-protected PDFs, and annotation tools. ReadEra and Moon+ Reader also advertise useful PDF controls.

Is Moon+ Reader Pro a one-time purchase?

The cited U.S. Google Play listing showed Moon+ Reader Pro as a $11.99 one-time purchase on August 18, 2026. Google Play prices can vary by country, tax, promotion, and storefront, so check the current listing before purchasing.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: there is no single best eBook reader app for Android. Choose Kindle for Amazon books, Libby for library loans, Google Play Books for Google purchases and uploads, Kobo for Kobo, ReadEra for simple DRM-free files, Moon+ Reader Pro for customization, and Librera for PDFs, comics, text-to-speech, and unusual formats. A two- or three-app setup is often more useful than forcing every book into one reader.
