Our verdict on BlenderDMX
BlenderDMX brings entertainment and architectural DMX lighting design into Blender. It is aimed at lighting designers who want to visualize and render scenes within a 3D workflow, particularly solo and small teams already working in Blender. The add-on is free, open source under GPLv3, and runs on Blender for Linux, Windows, and macOS. Fixture attributes can be controlled with an in-addon programmer, and scenes can be rendered using Blender’s Eevee or Cycles engines.
Its strongest fit is the mix of live visualization and interoperability. BlenderDMX imports GDTF fixture profiles, including through GDTF Share, and imports and exports MVR scenes; it also supports MVR-xchange. External DMX can arrive over sACN or Art-Net, while fixture selections can be sent to other software via OSC. PosiStageNet is also listed among its supported protocols. DMX input or programmer states can be recorded as Blender keyframes, which connects lighting control to Blender animation workflows. Eevee provides real-time rendering, while Cycles is available for photorealistic output.
The trade-off is that this is a Blender add-on rather than a standalone lighting package, so it makes most sense for designers comfortable with that environment. The product supports live previsualization, but its site cautions that performance may be suboptimal in fast dynamic scenes. It also does not cover plot or paperwork, so teams that need those deliverables should look for a broader lighting design tool. Choose BlenderDMX for free visualization, rendering, and DMX/MVR exchange in Blender; consider another option if paperwork or consistently smooth fast-scene preview is central to the workflow.
