Our verdict on Azure Bicep

Azure Bicep is an open-source domain-specific language for declaratively defining and deploying Azure resources through Azure Resource Manager. It is designed for infrastructure teams working across Azure resource groups, subscriptions, management groups, and tenants. Bicep files can be authored in Visual Studio Code or Visual Studio, then compiled to ARM JSON for deployment. The language focuses on concise definitions, type safety, resource API versions, reusable modules, and automatic dependency handling rather than broad multi-cloud coverage.

Its strongest feature set centers on authoring and deployment control. IntelliSense, syntax validation, linting, and the Bicep CLI help identify configuration issues, while what-if deployment previews show proposed changes before deployment. Visual Studio Code also supports JSON-to-Bicep decompilation and resource import. Policy assignments can be defined in Bicep files, extending infrastructure definitions into policy as code. Azure stores deployment state, and deployments can run through Azure CLI, Azure PowerShell, or Azure Cloud Shell, with integrations for Azure Policy and Azure Resource Manager.

Bicep is free and open source, with no paid tier dividing its core capabilities. Its managed state, drift detection, resource import, policy-as-code support, and self-hosted execution align with teams that want an Azure-native workflow across Windows, macOS, and Linux. The trade-off is deliberate scope: Bicep targets Azure only, and its configuration language is specific to Bicep. Choose it when Azure is the operating environment and concise declarative definitions matter. Teams requiring a single infrastructure language across multiple cloud providers should choose an alternative with broader cloud coverage.
