Our verdict on AWS Lake Formation

AWS Lake Formation is a managed cloud service for building and governing data lakes on Amazon S3. It is designed for organizations that need centralized metadata, controlled access, auditing, and data sharing across AWS accounts, organizations, Regions, and external consumers. The service works with the AWS Glue Data Catalog and connects with AWS analytics tools including Athena, Redshift Spectrum, Glue, and EMR. Access is available through the web and through the Lake Formation API and AWS CLI, making it a fit for AWS-native data teams with both console and programmatic workflows.

Pricing is usage-based rather than organized around fixed subscription plans. Lake Formation permissions and cross-account sharing are provided at no charge, while integrated services and certain storage, API, governed-table, and optimizer usage incur separate charges. That structure makes the total cost depend on the surrounding AWS architecture and how the lake is operated. The broader ecosystem includes AWS Glue, Amazon Athena, Amazon Redshift, Amazon EMR, Amazon CloudTrail, Amazon DynamoDB, AWS Data Exchange, Google BigQuery, and MySQL. Teams should evaluate the combined service footprint rather than treating Lake Formation as an isolated subscription.

Its strongest distinction is governance depth: permissions can be applied at database, table, column, row, and cell levels, with tag-based and attribute-based controls, federated catalogs, bulk and incremental database loading, and CloudTrail-based access auditing. Support for Iceberg, Hudi, and Delta Lake tables also suits environments using open table formats. Organizations seeking a narrow, standalone lake tool may find the AWS service model and multiple separately charged components less suitable. AWS-focused teams that prioritize fine-grained governance, cross-account sharing, and integration with existing analytics services should consider Lake Formation.
