Our verdict on Apple Sleep
Apple Sleep is the built-in sleep tracking experience for Apple Watch, aimed at people who want automatic tracking and sleep details within Apple’s own devices. Once sleep tracking is enabled and the watch is worn to bed, it estimates Awake, REM, Core, and Deep stages and provides a morning Sleep Score from 0 to 100. Sleep duration and history are available alongside related information in the Health app on iPhone or iPad. It is a fit for Apple Watch users who want sleep tracking without a separate paid app.
Its feature set combines overnight tracking with routines: users can set a sleep goal, create recurring schedules by bedtime, wake time, and active days, adjust wind-down settings, and use Sleep Focus. A wake-up alarm offers sound and haptic options. This makes Apple Sleep more than a record of overnight duration; schedules, focus settings, and the alarm support a consistent sleep routine. The details are designed around Apple Watch and Health, with sleep data accessible on iPhone or iPad through Apple Health.
The trade-off is that this is a focused, device-dependent experience rather than a standalone app for broader platforms. Tracking requires a paired iPhone and Apple Watch, and the watch should be worn for at least one hour each night to receive sleep data. Choose Apple Sleep if native Apple Watch tracking, estimated stages, a score, and routine controls meet your needs. Consider another option if you need sleep tracking without an Apple Watch or paired iPhone, or want a product outside this built-in Apple setup.
