Our verdict on Apache OpenWhisk
Apache OpenWhisk is an open-source platform for running functions in response to events or HTTP requests. It is aimed at teams that want to operate their own serverless environment, including developers building APIs, event-driven processing, scheduled jobs, or composed functions. Deployment options include local environments and Kubernetes, so it can fit teams that prefer to manage the platform rather than buy a vendor-hosted service.
Its event model is broader than a simple function endpoint: actions can be connected to triggers, rules, feeds, and sequences. Invocation can be synchronous or asynchronous, and web actions support HTTP handlers. REST access is available, while the wsk command-line tool and wskdeploy manifests provide management and application deployment paths. Docker-based runtimes allow custom execution environments; listed runtime languages include Go, Java, JavaScript/Node.js, .NET, PHP, Python, Ruby, Rust, Scala, and Swift. Integrations include Kafka, Cloudant, Slack, RSS, GitHub, and JIRA, making it relevant where event sources and existing services matter.
The key trade-off is operational responsibility: OpenWhisk is distributed as self-managed open-source software, not a vendor-hosted paid service. Kubernetes deployment support can suit teams already prepared to operate that environment, while teams looking for a managed service should consider hosted alternatives. The documentation describes a configurable action timeout range up to 300 seconds; that is a platform setting, not a paid-plan limit. Choose OpenWhisk when control over deployment and an event-driven programming model are priorities. It is a less natural fit for buyers who want a hosted product with a published plan and pricing structure.
